"Understanding Bursitis: Can Pilates Provide Relief?"

Updated: Apr 25

Bursitis usually occurs around the shoulder, hip and knee.

It is a painful condition and occurs when the bursae sacs that protect and cushion the tendons, bones and muscles around a joint become inflamed from overuse.

Doctors may prescribe rest and anti inflammatory.

From a Classical Pilates point of view the body is looked at as a whole and any muscle imbalance is addressed.

When a muscle is not working to its full potential, such as the glute muscles, it causes other muscles to overwork therefore causing an imbalance and tightness and eventually injury.

Pilates strengthens and stretches muscles simultaneously and teaches the body how to use every muscle which is why most people claim to feel muscles they "didn't think they had!! "

A great exercises for hip bursitis that will help strengthen the hip area is hip bridges (pictured below) . Trying to concentrate on using the glute muscles, lift the hips off the floor and try and hold for 5 seconds. Repeat 8 to 10 times.
